This is why we avoid political discussions at family gatherings like the plague...

It bothers me to think that my strong family has let political ideologies wreak such havoc. I don’t understand. Maybe because my mother was a Republican and my dad was a Democrat, and I learned early on that love and respect weren’t contingent on voting this way or that. Sure, they argued, but at the end of the day, they sat down at the same table, passed the lasagna, and didn’t let politics overshadow family.
