What Happens When We Give Back
A Behind The Scenes Look
What happens when you give to a local food pantry, whether it is of your time or your money, is that of course there is the cost of food, but there is also the cost of upkeep, as well as electricity for running industrial fridges and freezers, trash pick-up, heating, and air conditioning, and again there is the cost of disposing of donations of food and clothing, usually dumped off during off-hours, that aren’t suitable for consumption. As a result of donations like that, volunteers are responsible for disposing of the literal garbage. Do we want donations? Yes! Do we want canned goods from 2010? Absolutely not!
Our pantry looked very different for a while, as you can see in this picture, but the Church stepped up and did some major remodeling. We have a satellite pantry located on our church property, so we don’t have to pay rent or electricity, as our church takes care of things like electricity and trash. The rooms are furnished by the Church for them, but that’s not true for Nancy’s Hope main branch, where they have to pay for everything and donations of trash items are a problem.
