Chapter Three:

It had all changed in a moment when a man came in to harm someone and I was the target, maybe because I was a cop, maybe it was simply random, either way, my life had changed forever.

Brock, my partner for nearly a decade, came by to check on me every day before or after shifts, but even he understood that my life had changed. Although he tried to pretend otherwise, he tried to act as if I would be returning, but I was a cop, and it wasn’t the most handicap accessible field.

I hated the term handicap. Though I didn’t want to think about it, I couldn’t ignore the damage that bullet had done to my spine. It was now my reality. Because a grown man was throwing a tantrum and taking his anger out on someone in the parking lot of a home improvement store.

“You’ll be out of here before you know it Emilia.” Brock said with confidence. I knew I would be going home, I just worried about going to the career I had been called to since I was ten when a cousin was kidnapped and murdered.

I rarely talked about my cousin Alexis, it was too painful to think about. I was close to her, and we had been close up until that day, when she was abducted by some monster walking home from school, it was unimaginable. When I was…
