When She Was Stolen-Chapter Twelve
Second Chances
She looked as if she had aged a few years in the last couple of weeks; there was an unspoken sadness in her eyes. My desire was to take it all from her, but I was powerless to do so. Now that she was home, we could have a second chance, I thanked God for that every day.
When Brianna was released from the hospital, Elaine picked us up. Because of everything she had been through, Brianna was understandably nervous.
Elaine was gentle with Bri, which I appreciated. It was quite the opposite of our Mother whose only focus was to chase her next high, the same person who sold Bri to the highest bidder for her next fix, and was also responsible for my injuries, but we were both alive and had been given a second chance.
When my sister was taken, I had been protective of her, but now that she was safe in my arms, that intensity only increased. While I wanted to do everything in my power to protect her, I felt safe with Elaine and her family. This was the family I had dreamed of, the one that existed before my Mother became so addicted to drugs that everything else ceased to matter.
As hurt as Bri was physically, mentally, and emotionally, she still worried about me, and felt bad, a guilt I never wanted her to feel. Neither my sister or I asked to be hurt, that was on my mother…
