Why I Write What I Write

“Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly — they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced.”

— Aldous Huxley, Brave New World

I often get ask why I choose to write about people with disabilities so often, whether in fiction or nonfiction I am all for stories of overcoming. I devour books that I find inspiring. When I was in middle School, around the sixth grade our class read The Miracle Worker and from then on I read everything I could on Helen Keller from

The Story of my Life, to Helen, Teacher and Me.

Many of my greatest inspirations have passed on those I knew like my Nonna, and my Aunt and those who inspired me by the life they lead, people like AutiAngel who sadly passed away in March of 2022.

For those of you who don’t know Auti-Angel was a dancer and singer who happened to be in a wheelchair after a car accident left her paralyzed. Dance speaks to movement the way writing speaks to words. And when we loose someone that touches the world on the way Auti-Angel did it touches both friends and strangers.
