The Impact of Giving

Colossians 3:12 (NIV)

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Yesterday as part of our Sunday School lesson plan we asked the children if they would be willing to sacrifice something they liked/loved in order to share it with someone who may not have the same blessings they have. A favorite toy, a treat even the lunch they brought to school, and each child had a different answer though they all had solutions. One child was willing to give up their entire lunch if another child didn’t have one, because they knew when they got home they would have food again.

In the thirteen months I’ve been volunteering at the food pantry, I found myself facing this very scenario, and often I find myself sacrificing my lunch, knowing that I can go home at the end of the day and make a meal.

Children who are taught to give turn into giving adults, adults who help to make the world a little better place, not at the cost of loosing themselves but in doing so they find themselves.

Teaching a child to give is important, but it’s also important we remind them why we give.
