Where Are the Disabled Characters On the Screen
It is estimated that one in five people throughout the world have a disability in one form or another, making it the largest minority in the world, but it seems Media has yet to receive the message, because the lack of inclusion is evident in this area, there are of course exceptions, but more needs to be done!
An estimated twenty percent of the world’s population has a disability, not only is it the largest minority in the world, but it is the only one that anyone can join at any time. An accident, or an illness can bring it on, and yet we are still talking about the need for proper portrayal of those with disabilities, not some glamorous version but on the other end, not some tragic portrayal as if everyone with a disability is depressed all the time, neither one of those is accurate though.
Once again, I turned to my favorite show Bones, and the way they skated around the fact that Dr Brennan likely had Asperger’s Syndrome.
And then there were shows Like The Big Bang Theory, again focusing on Asperger’s and again they did a good job, but I feel it…
