Lessons from Life and Writing

We are often told, it’s Important to write what you know. I think what is more is writing to grow as a person, each one of us has something we offer to the world something unique to us. Something that may resonate with others, it can be fiction or nonfiction, as for me I am often drawn to fiction.

Over thirty years ago, I began my journey as a writer, most of my earliest writings with the exception of a few poems have been lost to time. Honestly that’s probably for the best, because my earliest stories should not see the light of day.

But life experiences help you grow as writer, whether you are writing nonfiction or fiction. Life experience can translate into good storytelling, because we learn what works and what doesn’t and we learn at times you just have to throw that all out of the window, and you tell the story you are meant to tell.
