Prologue:

Some secrets should stay buried, at least that’s the message I got on Twitter, the day before my world was turned upside down.

I didn’t take the message seriously, at least not in that moment. I thought it was some crackpot on twitter. Somebody who wasn’t happy unless they were causing someone trouble.

You should let the past, stay in the past, let sleeping dogs lie.

I could only think about how cliche whoever this person was sounded.

I logged off Twitter, not really wanting to read anymore drama or nonsense. I didn’t need to allow myself to get upset over nonsense.

I shut down my computer and looked over the notes for the novel, I was finishing up, the file that laid on my desk.

I heard my phone, going off letting me know that I had a text coming through.

I grabbed my phone, and stared at the message, there was no number.

I know where you are, you are going to pay for sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong.

I heard the branches hitting against the kitchen window, trying to convince myself what I was hearing, was the wind and nothing more.

I could smell burning popcorn, popcorn I had burned, startled by that text message.
