You Taught Me (A Poem of Remembrance)

For Nonna, whose been gone for nearly seventeen years but her legacy lives on.

You taught me

That beauty

True beauty comes

Within

That what matters

Comes from within.

You taught me

Life is not always

Easy

There is times

It seems

It’s out to break you

But never let

A broken faith

Shake you.

You taught me

To stand up for myself

To be strong and decisive

And never to let

Someone else’s

Definitions define

You.

You taught me

That having a disability

Didn’t make you disabled

That if you fought

You could achieve

Even the highest of

Dreams.

You taught me

Never to say

“I’m bored
